● In July 2017, the Royal Commission for AlUla (or RCU) was formally established by Royal Order to reinvigorate this region of extraordinary natural and cultural significance.
● The Royal Commission is developing and delivering a sensitive, sustainable transformation of the region, ready to receive and delight visitors from around the world. RCU will protect and regenerate the natural beauty of AlUla’s unique geological landscape and reaffirm its position as one of Saudi Arabia’s most important archaeological and cultural areas.
● This particular focus on the AlUla region is a key element of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 program to develop a dynamic tourism sector. Saudi Arabia’s natural, cultural and historic assets have evident, untapped potential to appeal to a range of visitors, whom the Kingdom looks forward to welcoming.

● One of the goals of the Royal Commission is to turn the AlUla county into a leading destination for heritage, culture, art and nature . AlUla is home to iconic Hegra, also known as “Mada’in Salih” which became the first Saudi Arabian UNESCO World Heritage site in Saudi Arabia in 2008.
● With protection of AlUla’s exceptional cultural, historical, natural and archaeological value at the core of RCU’s vision, AlUla will be transformed into an inspiring destination, welcoming local and international visitors from across the globe.

● Infrastructure and facilities must be created for visitors to experience the world-class cultural experiences that AlUla deserves. RCU’s work will have a positive impact on a regional scale, creating long term prosperity for the area. New education, training and employment opportunities will enrich the lives of local communities and support economic growth.

● The organization is looking to preserve AlUla’s unique identity and rich heritage to increase the number of annual visitors to the region and make it a prime tourist destination. RCU is working with a team of leading experts to unlock the area’s extraordinary natural and cultural assets, investing in AlUla as a destination of global importance.

● The Journey Through Time Masterplan for AlUla was released in April 2021. It is the first in a series of plans for AlUla and constitutes the first and most important part of AlUla’s development. The Journey Through Time Masterplan will be implemented in three phases until 2035, while the first phase is set to be completed by 2023, aiming to provide a comprehensive visitor-centric experience.
